Day 66

I thought Fridays were supposed to be fun, but today was BUSY. I think that my work colleagues may have gotten past the blonde stigma and have realized that I am actually a completely competent and capable human being. This seems to be a positive development in my sociological experiment, but it definitely interferes with my online shopping time while on the clock. I like maintaining the appropriate balance in my life; I like earning money while simultaneously spending money. Life is all about BALANCE.

I don’t know about you, but since Al Gore invented the internet, my life has changed, but more importantly the way I shop has changed. It used to be really exciting when you heard that you were getting an Old Navy at the mall. Now, it doesn’t really matter if the shop is physically in your proximity, you can order things online and they magically arrive at your door a little later. I think that this has probably contributed to the increased number of obese people and the national debt. You don’t have to go to the mall and walk from one end to the other to collect your goods and you don’t have to walk around the parking garage or parking lot 5 times because you forgot where you parked. You don’t have to worry about having enough cash because you have 3 credit cards; buy now, worry later. I’m probably going to sound like a grandpa who says, “I remember when you could get a steak dinner for a nickel,” but I’m pretty sure that my mom would let me go to the mall with my friends with like $10 in my pocket. That $10 could get me into a movie and some new jewelry. I was really lucky if I had a $20 in my pocket; I was invincible. I could see a movie, score the newest scent of body splash at Bath & Body Works, and still have enough left over for some Wendy’s chicken nuggets and a Frosty. Sometimes, I miss having the freedom of spending the last dollar to my name. You didn’t have to worry about rent, bills, or savings. It was all about instant gratification and good, old-fashioned capitalistic fun. I think online shopping might be as close as I can get to recapturing the glory days; so if I have to have a job that makes me so busy I can’t troll around the internet in search of the perfect garden gnome or Star Wars Tauntaun sleeping bag, I may have to quit. Retail therapy is too important for my mental health.
